Συνέντευξη απ' τον Υπεύθυνο του ΜΒΑ του Πανεπιστημίου της Γλασκώβης

Dr Ignacio Canales' (Glasgow MBA Programme Convenor)

1) What applicants should know before choosing to apply for your MBA programs? What an applicant should expect?

Studying for the Glasgow MBA is a truly transformational experience that will equip students with the tools and skills that will enable them to become the leaders of the future and captains of industry. The MBA is more than a full-time programme and applicants should expect to work extremely hard seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year to produce the transformational results.

2) How much work experience students should have before applying for an MBA?Do you think that applicants with few years of work experience can also benefit from an MBA degree?

Applicants should have a minimum of three years’ work experience before applying for the Glasgow MBA. This should be managerial experience i.e. experience managing a team or driving projects. We find students benefit the most if they are able to link theory to practice and apply real-life managerial examples and experiences to their learning.

3) How do schools view students who did their undergraduate studies in a non-traditional (non-business) field?

We would happily accept students who have completed their undergraduate studies in a non-business field. The MBA is designed to transform careers and as long as students meet the entry criteria it does not matter if they come from a non-traditional field.

4) Does the school’s mission and culture have any defining characteristics and hence what would be your advice for a successful application?

The Adam Smith Business School’s mission is to “undertake research and teaching of international standing that encourages staff and students to engage critically with practice and policy and deploy their professional skills to socio-economic benefit.” The Glasgow MBA is heavily research driven and aims to deliver an integrative research-led and distinctive postgraduate experience that meets the needs of the national and international business and management community. The School also has strong links with a number of public and private sector organisations including Amazon UK, BBC Scotland, IBM, Lloyds TSB and Scottish Enterprise to name a few. The Glasgow MBA is a challenging course with high-entrance criteria. Students must work very hard to earn the degree.

5) Have you seen any change in the profiles of the applicants in the last five years - during the financial crisis?

The financial crisis in Europe has resulted in an increase in international students and our international profile has improved due to this. Students are welcomed from all over the world and this international experience gives our students a broader perspective on the challenges facing future leaders and managers working in an ever-changing world.

6) Finally, I would like to ask you about the career-paths of your graduates? (i.e. any records/numbers? redirecting or boosting their previous careers?)

As a student of the Glasgow MBA you will get the opportunity to specialise in finance, marketing or strategy by choosing three out of five electives on that degree path. However this will not diminish your capacity to become a CEO as the MBA is a general business degree, giving you an extra tool to achieve your career development objectives as it will give you a specialisation in your chosen subject. You could enter the programme with a degree in physics, specialise in marketing and become a CEO in a multinational cooperation! There are no set career paths: our graduates come from various backgrounds and go on to manage and lead in national and multinational companies all over the world.
